They are sometimes poorly laid out and ill-equipped to serve their purpose.I have taught in numerous of these disasters and have designed other laboratories that have been a pleasure to educate in. It'd be nice if price wasn't a constraining factor in all faculty building design, but it is.The easiest way to approach the look of your lab is from the stand-point of what you want, then pare it down if the final cost is over-budget.
A faculty lab is mostly bigger than the average lecture room. The reason is because it could have 35 scholars moving around it, flames from Bunsen burners, sinks, electric kit and glassware all at the same time, as well as writing materials, PCs and boards. Ideally you must separate student writing areas from student experimental areas.
The best way to do that is to have sinks, electric outlets and workbenches round the 3 sides of the room. There should be a clear walkway all round the room in front of these workbenches, so that scholars can move about safely.
The fouth side of the room will be where the board and teacher's bench are. School fume hoods are not used regularly, as the chemicals employed in school laboratories are not aprticularly malicious.
Fume hoods are best situated on the wall with the board and the teacher's area. Employing a fume hood with a class is basically unreal due to the logistics issues concerned with 35 scholars needing to use 1 or 2 tiny spaces at the same time. These areas will be used infrequently and only momentarily. You may also need desks or benches for scholars to sit at to draft at and for non-practical lessons.
These workbenches will are best situated about 5 feet away from the perimeter work benches. A fan agreement works really well, with the desks end on to where the taecher stands. Groups of desks make for more gossip among your students. That gives you your ideal college lab. You may certainly be overbudget at about that point. Consider long sinks at the rear of the worktop though .
* Cut the number of electric outlets - Tiny savings. * Cut the quantity of cupboards - Huge savings possible but increases student movement round the lab, and where do you put all of the equipment? * Have only 1 fume-hood - Giant savings, and you will seldom use it any way.
